We’ve all seen the signs in various establishments, “This Is A Drug-Free Workplace.” The problem is that in far too many cases, this simply isn’t the truth. Now, that’s not to say that the employer isn’t at least a bit concerned with the impact drugs may have on his or her business. The fact of the matter is that most employers really don’t know how to establish a truly drug-free work place. Many of these employers think that by simply stating that drug and alcohol use in the workplace won’t be tolerated, they have now met the requirements of establishing a drug-free workplace. Add a few signs and that ought to do the trick.
Nothing could be further from the truth!
So, just how big is the problem of employees using drugs or alcohol in the workplace? Actually, it’s not so much that it’s a big problem…it’s a tremendously huge problem. Fact: Alcohol and drug abuse cost American business $100 billion per year. Looking at the number is even more impressive…$100,000,000,000. Fact: 73% of current drug users over the age of 18 have a job. Fact: Drug or alcohol using employees are 2.2 times more likely to ask for time off, 2.5 times more likely to be absent eight or more days a year, 3.6 times more likely to have a workplace accident, and 5 times more likely to file a worker’s compensation claim. Fact: 75% of callers to a national drug hotline admitted that they had used drugs or alcohol at work, 44% of the callers admitted to selling drugs in the workplace and 18% of those callers said that they had committed other workplace crimes to support their habit.
Those are numbers that should make any business owner sit up and take notice, because the fact is, without a comprehensive substance abuse program in place, they are undoubtedly losing money…and lots of it. Even as technology and innovation have become so important in today’s workplace, the corporate heads of the most successful companies nationwide agree on one thing. Their employees are their greatest asset. Without that workforce, there isn’t even the opportunity for success.
In order to really set up a drug-free workplace, many employers are going to have to expand their current line of thinking to be far more comprehensive. There are five key elements to any complete program and they are: an official and written company policy, a supervisor’s training program, an education program for employees, an employee assistance program and drug testing.
To be honest, these tasks are not as simple as they may sound. Each of these elements has their own pitfalls. The written policy has any number of legal aspects to be explored. The supervisor/employee programs can’t be taught by just anyone. Personnel directors struggle with employee assistance questions every day and drug testing also raises a number of legal implications. It will require a good amount of research and/or professional help in order to successfully implement and continue an ongoing program. Nevertheless, the job can be done…it should be done…and it is well worth the effort.
